Cell Vocabulary:
- Euglena: Single-celled flagellate protist
- Amoeba: single-celled pseudopodia protist
- Paramecium: single-celled ciliated protist
- Volvox: single-celled green algae
- Eukaryote: cells that contain nucleus
- Prokaryote: cells that don’t contain nucleus. DNA float in cytoplasm.
- Eyespot: light receptor for single celled organisms
- Pseudopod: moves cytoplasm for locomotion
- Flagella: tail-like structure for locomotion
- Phagocytosis: engulfs single celled organisms for food
- Osmosis: diffusion of water through semi-permeable membrane
- Cell membrane: a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment
- Cell wall: a very tough, flexible and sometimes fairly rigid layer that surrounds some types of cells
- Nucleus: a central organelle of an eukaryote cell, containing most of the cells DNA
- Chloroplasts: organelle that conducts photosynthesis
- Mitochondria: organelle that supplies energy to the cell
- Vacuoles: enclosed compartments which are filled with water containing molecules
- Cytoplasm: All of the contents of the cells are contained within the cytoplasm
- Nuclear envelope: the membrane surrounding the nucleus
- Cell: basic unit of life
- Cell Theory: a scientific theory which describes the properties of cells.
- Ribosome: organelle that produces proteins
- Organelle: specialized subunit within a cell that has a specific function.
- Tissue: a group of biological cells that perform a similar function
- Organ: a collection of different tissues joined in structural unit to serve a common function
- System: A group or organs that work together
- Photosynthesis: a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy, normally from the Sun, into chemical energy that can be later released to fuel the organisms' activities.
- Diffusion: net movement of a substance (e.g., an atom, ion or molecule from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration.
- Endoplasmic Reticulum: organelle that synthesizes and exports proteins and membrane lipids (Rough- contain Ribosomes; smooth- no ribosomes).
- Golgi Apparatus (Body): organelle that packages proteins inside the cell before they are sent to their destination
- Lysosome: organelle that acts as waste disposal system of the cell by digesting unwanted materials.
